Individual Therapy

My practical approach to therapy is a careful balance between  evidence-based treatment, and establishing a genuine professional  connection with each client. It’s very important that clients feel comfortable enough to communicate their concerns and let me know what’s  really on their mind. The exact treatment approach varies based on each  person’s unique concerns, but usually includes an emphasis on the  interaction between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By identifying  and strategically targeting unhelpful patterns, we can develop more effective techniques for dealing with many types of problems.

No two people are alike. For this reason, I also use a values  clarification process to help explore what has the most personal meaning  and importance. Clarification of core-values, and increased commitment  to valued behaviors is often a central component of successful  treatment. For many people therapy also includes an emphasis on  developing a powerful type of present moment awareness known as  “mindfulness.” By learning specific mindfulness techniques and applying  them to thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, we can become better equipped  to handle life’s challenges, improve relationships, and gain control  over emotional suffering.

I offer brief and long-term therapy for teens and adults with concerns related to:

  • ADHD
  • Anxiety (Generalized anxiety, OCD, Panic Disorder, Social and other phobias.)
  • Depression
  • Adjustment to life changes
  • Stress management
  • Binge eating disorder
  • Relationship concerns
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Grief and loss

Appointment times are flexible to accommodate students and working  professionals. Limited after hours and Saturday appointments may be available upon request.

ADHD Evaluation & Treatment

With a surprising increase in reported cases of ADHD, getting the right diagnosis is important. Signs and symptoms often believed to be ADHD can actually stem from different causes, and do not always mean a positive diagnosis of ADHD. A thorough clinical evaluation can help clarify the factors contributing to current symptoms. Evaluation for ADHD includes:

  • Developmental history
  • Family history
  • Mental health history
  • Academic history
  • Employment history
  • Evaluation of current psychological functioning
  • Additional self-report and observer-report questionnaires

In-person psychological testing/assessment of cognitive ability, academic achievement, and other areas of psychological functioning is NOT offered at this time.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for ADHD is an evidence-based treatment focused on establishing important skills for better managing symptoms. Structured treatment sessions include:

  • Organization and planning/prioritization skills to improve deficits in executive functioning.
  • Distractibility management skills.
  • Adaptive thinking skills to manage automatic thoughts and emotions that contribute to unhelpful behaviors (avoidance, procrastination, etc.).
