My practical approach to therapy is a careful balance between evidence-based treatment, and establishing a genuine professional connection with each client. It’s very important that clients feel comfortable enough to communicate their concerns and let me know what’s really on their mind. The exact treatment approach varies based on each person’s unique concerns, but usually includes an emphasis on the interaction between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By identifying and strategically targeting unhelpful patterns, we can develop more effective techniques for dealing with many types of problems.
No two people are alike. For this reason, I also use a values clarification process to help explore what has the most personal meaning and importance. Clarification of core-values, and increased commitment to valued behaviors is often a central component of successful treatment. For many people therapy also includes an emphasis on developing a powerful type of present moment awareness known as “mindfulness.” By learning specific mindfulness techniques and applying them to thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, we can become better equipped to handle life’s challenges, improve relationships, and gain control over emotional suffering.
